Gender & sexuality have always been a part of my work, but I have never directly aligned myself with a specific non-profit or organization. Planned Parenthood is constantly under fire from conservatives in Congress, to ultrachrsitan protestors, to random misogynists posting on social media. Like the hashtag, I stand with Planned Parenthood – & I stand with them thru my art.
These collages are both political & personal. They focus on what Planned Parenthood means to me, but also to generations of women, men, & those outside the gender binary who use & rely on their services. Much of the collages are grounded in Planned Parenthood’s signature pink, as well as their own promotional & educational material. They are a more professional photomontage mixture of my own photography, content from women’s health magazines, & feminist art collected from Tumblr.
Like a lot of my gender work in the past, I hope to upload these to various social media outlets to create a dialogue. & hopefully, the official Planned Parenthood accounts will recognize my art & circulate it to a larger audience. Some of the spreads are designed for “the real world” as well – billboards, posters, & bus imagery.
